How Superannuation Works
Employer Contributions
Your employer is required to contribute 12% of your ordinary salary to your superannuation fund (as of July 2025). This is known as the Super Guarantee. You don't receive this money directly—it goes into your super account.
Contributions Tax
Super contributions are taxed at 15% within the fund. This is lower than most people's marginal tax rate, making it a tax-effective way to save for retirement.
Investment Returns
Your super balance grows through investment returns. The actual return depends on your fund's investment strategy, market conditions, and time horizon. This calculator uses a fixed assumption for simplicity.
Fees
Superannuation funds charge annual fees, typically 0.5% to 1.5% of your balance. Fees reduce your net returns. Use your fund's Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) to find exact fee rates.
Voluntary Contributions
You can contribute extra money to your super, either as concessional contributions (taxed at 15%) or non-concessional contributions (already taxed). Voluntary contributions can help you retire earlier or with more savings.
Inflation Adjustment
This calculator shows your projected balance in today's dollars (inflation-adjusted). This helps you understand the real purchasing power of your super at retirement, accounting for inflation.
